Daylight saving time ends in the USA on Sunday 1 November 2026. At 02:00 local time, the clocks go back one hour, to 01:00.[1][2] That night is one hour longer: an extra hour of sleep.

What time do the clocks go back?

Each time zone changes at 02:00 local time, so the change moves across the country one hour at a time, from east to west:[1]

  • Eastern Time, for example New York, Washington and Atlanta: from UTC-4 to UTC-5.
  • Central Time, for example Chicago, Houston and Dallas: from UTC-5 to UTC-6.
  • Mountain Time, for example Denver and Salt Lake City: from UTC-6 to UTC-7.
  • Pacific Time, for example Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle: from UTC-7 to UTC-8.
  • Alaska, for example Anchorage: from UTC-8 to UTC-9.

Who keeps the same time?

Hawaii and most of Arizona do not change their clocks; the Navajo Nation in Arizona does. The US territories keep the same time too: Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa.[1][2] From Sunday, Phoenix has the same time as Denver again, one hour ahead of Los Angeles.

This year the time differences to Canada change. British Columbia, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Manitoba and northwestern Ontario now stay on summer time all year, so they do not turn their clocks back.[3] From Sunday:

  • Vancouver is one hour ahead of Seattle and Los Angeles.
  • Calgary and Edmonton are one hour ahead of Denver.
  • Winnipeg is one hour ahead of Chicago, with the same time as New York.

Toronto, Montréal and Halifax turn their clocks back on the same night as the USA. More in Clocks go back in eastern Canada.

Most of Mexico has not changed its clocks since 2022, so from Sunday, Mexico City has the same time as Chicago again. Only the towns on the US border, such as Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez, turn their clocks back with the USA: they keep the same time as San Diego and El Paso.[4] More in Clocks go back on Mexico's border.

Europe: back to the usual time differences

Europe turned its clocks back one week earlier, on Sunday 25 October 2026. For that week, New York was only 4 hours behind London. From Sunday, the usual differences are back: New York is 5 hours behind London and 6 hours behind Paris and Berlin. The Meeting Time Planner shows the hours that suit both sides.

Not yet. In July 2026, the House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent.[2][5] But the bill has stalled in the Senate, so the clocks still change twice a year.[2]

Next change: Sunday 14 March 2027

Daylight saving time starts again on Sunday 14 March 2027, when the clocks go forward one hour at 02:00 local time.[1]

This year's change is as early as it can be. The first Sunday of November always falls between the 1st and the 7th. It last fell on the 1st in 2020, and the next time will be in 2037.
