Russia switches to permanent winter time

Published: 11th Oct 2014

The State Duma, Moscow, Russia.

Russia's parliament voted to switch the clocks from permanent summer time to permanent winter time. The time change will occur on October 26, 2014. This change means that the sun is up an hour earlier every morning.

The president Dmitry Medvedev introduced the permanent summer time in 2011. At the same time the time zones were diminished down from eleven to nine.

The lower house of parliament, the state of Duma, voted 422-1 to return to standard time this autumn and reinstate eleven time zones.

Medvedev has argued that the change to permanent summer time would improve wellbeing but many Russians felt the opposite.

"The winter time does not now correspond to geography," explained Alexander Zhukov, who is the lower house vice-speaker.
